How to adventure safely in the sun: Top 5 tips

June 05, 2024

When the sun is shining, it’s the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy some thrilling adventures. At Cavan Adventure Centre, we offer a range of activities that let you soak up the sunshine while having loads of fun. However, while the sun can be your best friend, it can also be quite dangerous if you’re not careful. Here are our top five tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time under the sun.

1. Stay hydrated

Hydration is key when you’re spending time outdoors, especially if the sun is shining. When you’re engaging in physical activities, your body loses water through sweat. If you don’t replace this water, you can quickly become dehydrated, leading to headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Always bring a water bottle with you and take regular sips, even if you don’t feel thirsty. For activities like kayaking or paddleboarding, consider using a water bottle with a secure lid to avoid any spills. Adding a pinch of salt or an electrolyte tablet can also help replenish essential minerals lost through sweating.

2. Wear protective sunglasses

The glare from the water can be intense and harmful to your eyes. Whether you’re boating, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the lake, a good pair of sunglasses is essential. Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection and are polarised to reduce glare. Polarised sunglasses not only protect your eyes but also enhance your vision, making it easier to see under the water and spot any obstacles. This is particularly useful when you’re engaged in activities like paddleboarding or canoeing, where clear vision is crucial for safety.

3. Choose the right footwear

While flip-flops are comfortable and easy to wear, they might not be the best choice for all outdoor activities. They can cause you to trip easily, especially on uneven terrain or slippery surfaces. If you’re hiking, exploring rocky shores, or engaging in activities like archery or climbing, opt for sturdy shoes with good grip. Water shoes are a great alternative for aquatic activities as they offer protection and traction without weighing you down.

4. Use the elements to guide you

Nature has its way of giving us hints about changing weather conditions. Being observant can help you avoid getting caught in an unexpected storm or extreme heat. For instance, if you notice clouds starting to gather and darken, it’s a sign that rain could be on the way. Pay attention to the wind as well – if it suddenly picks up, it could indicate a weather change. At Cavan Adventure Centre, we always recommend checking the weather forecast before heading out. Paying attention to the sky and being able to read the signs in nature can give you an extra layer of safety.

5. Protect your skin

The Irish sun may not feel as harsh as in some other parts of the world, but it can still cause sunburn and long-term skin damage. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading out, and reapply it every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeves, hats, and UV-protective swimwear, can also help shield your skin. Don’t forget areas like the back of your neck, ears, and the tops of your feet, which are often exposed and easily overlooked.

Enjoy the sun safely

Adventuring in the sun can be a fantastic experience, especially at Cavan Adventure Centre, where there’s so much to do and see. By following these tips, you can protect yourself from the sun’s harmful effects and make the most of your time outdoors. So grab your gear, slather on some sunscreen, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
