Embrace the joy of staycations: A trend that’s here to stay

June 10, 2024

This year, nearly three-quarters of people are opting for staycations on the island of Ireland, a trend highlighted by a recent survey from Hastings Hotels. With summer temperatures soaring across mainland Europe and growing concerns about the environmental impact of flying, many holidaymakers are choosing to stay closer to home.

According to the online survey, which gathered responses from over 1,700 individuals from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, extreme heat events in Europe have influenced the travel plans of 27% of respondents. Additionally, 21% of people are avoiding air travel altogether due to its environmental impact, and 41% consider sustainability when selecting their accommodation.

Despite Ireland’s unpredictable weather, which affects the decision-making of 60% of respondents, the lure of staycations remains strong. Financial factors also play a significant role, with 37% of participants needing to spend more on holidays this year due to rising costs. Interestingly, 18% are prepared to invest more for a premium experience, while around one in nine plans to cut back on spending.

Convenience is a key motivator for choosing a staycation, followed by a desire to explore local attractions and minimize travel time. Relaxation and rejuvenation are also high on the list, with many using these breaks to celebrate special occasions. When it comes to accommodations, top priorities for respondents include spa facilities, pools, recreational offerings, and gourmet dining options.

Nearly half of those surveyed plan to take three or more staycations this year, averaging less than a week each, with another 35% planning two. The majority prefer to spend their downtime with their partners, followed by immediate family and friends.
